They can be changed on ancestry ..... just click on Add Alternate Information, and choose Birth Place

I have Birling in Kent transcribed as Berlin.

just like a transcriber didn't know that Som't (upper script t) was shorthand for Somerset .............. and transcribed it as Somalia

I would guess that P'mth or P'mth are abbreviations for Portsmouth or Plymouth

If you are searching for any of the above without success try searching birthplace as Pruth.
I have just come across pages of people with birthplace logged as P'mth or Pmth, when I investigated a placename Pruth, which I hadn't heard of.
