I think C on M is what he wrote. Not Louth Mcr.

Will submit amendments.

EDIT, no facility to submit amendment to place of birth - Doh!

Potty, didn't see your post till now - ties in with my thinking. Didn't help that Emily's birth is also Chorlton.

Thanks, I think that will do.

Could it be DENTON... That is in Manchester

Madmeg Report 22 Jan 2011 14:05

I think it's a C - see Cheetham further up, and Crewe lower down - page 9.

The family is split up in 1911 (not looked for deaths of parents yet) and no sign of Mary J, but I've found Emily with grandparents, g/m remarried but previously Owen, and on earlier censuses they are listed as born Chorlton on Medlock - so I guess his scribble could be an attempt at an abbreviation of that.

The only births registered in the area and in the right years for Mary J Owen and Caroline Owen are in Chorlton (Chorlton on Medlock on Lancs BMD). Looking at the image (especially the way the Ms are formed), I wonder if it is C on M?

Could this be Caroline's birth:-

Name: Caroline Owen
Year of Registration: 1896
Quarter of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep
District: Bolton
County: Greater Manchester, Lancashire
Volume: 8c
Page: 524

It's a vague possibility that the word on the census could be Bolton.

Can somebody please have a look at the original record for:

1901 England Census
about Mary J Owen Name: Mary J Owen
Age: 6
Estimated birth year: abt 1895
Relation: Daughter
Father's name: William Owen
Mother's name: Sarah Owen
Gender: Female
Where born: Hulme, Lancashire, England

Civil Parish: South Manchester
Ecclesiastical parish: St Mary the Virgin
County/Island: Lancashire
Registration district: Chorlton
Sub-registration district: Hulme
ED, institution, or vessel: 30
Neighbors: View others on page
Household schedule number: 50
Household Members: Name Age
William Owen 34
Sarah Owen 31
Mary J Owen 6
Caroline Owen 4
Emily Owen 3 Weeks

- cos Mary J and Caroline are NOT born Hulme, but I can't for the life of me decipher the place. On Page 9 there's another example of this place with a new pencil, but it isn't helping me. Ancestry have transcribed that as Hulme too. FMP have it as Louth M/cr. Okay if South M/cr but this enumerator seems to be quite precise.

Thanks
