Okay Ann, Thanks for your help. I have looked on Ancestry Baptisms but haven't found them on there. Just to add to the confusion I've just found a birth for William John 1848 in Workhouse, Walworth, father left blank mother Charlotte Eliza Kernick, wonder if this is Joseph?

Sorry, Ann, missed it in amongst the others.

Hi Linda,

If you are able to locate the cert for Joseph I would purchase that one as well. It will take you nearer to 1851 and should give you her address.

I would also ring the local records office for the Newington area and ask them for a baptism lookup for him & Charlotte.

Charles Kernick (if he is mine) was born in a workhouse but Charlotte was born at 4 New Street, haven't got a cert. for Joseph.

Hi Ann,
On Charles marriage cert. the occupation is just left blank. I assumed him dead as his marriage was 1881 and his mother Charlotte had been recorded as a "widow" since 1861 Census.

Since it's the Parsons line I'm following have you any idea how I can go back any further if I can't find the father of any of the children?

None of the children have been baptised!!

Linda,

Is that you posting 2008, saying all children born in workhouse??

If so have you checked their records?

Update for 1861 census:

Charlotte is actually 33. Otherwise she would have been 11 when she had Joseph.

Blimey Linda........just read your last post..........thats put a cat amongst the pigeons!

Kernick is a Cornish name.

Also the first child Joseph..........then 8 years later Charles, unusual to have that big a gap if you were in a relationship/marriage in those days. Wonder did Joseph have a different father??

I would see if I could find a baptism record for them.......you would be suprised on some entries what the vicar may add to the record.

I would think that your Charlotte was at birth Parsons, hence no marriage and the fathers column on cert blank, alsso no maiden name for Charlotte.

Have you tried baptisms for Newington (St Mary).

I had a similar scenario, mum three kids all named Davies, on sons marriage .......fathers name Richard Davies.........never saw him on any census.........she always stating married or widow. he did not exist, only in his sons imagination.

Many illegitimate people "made up" a fathers name, because of the stigma attached to their status. On the sons marriage does it say his father DECEASED?

Apologies for confusing things about but I have just sorted through the certs. I have and found the one for Charles Kernick but once again the fathers name and occupation is blank but it does state mothers maiden name as Kernick. I still can't find a marriage for Charlotte Kernick to John Parsons?

Linda

Linda Report 22 Jan 2011 23:02

I do have the birth cert. of Charlotte but in Fathers Name and Occupation there are just dashes. Mothers name is Charlotte Parsons and doesn't have a maiden name.

If that is Charles's birth and I get the cert. how can I confirm if it's the one I want?

Have posted after saying looks like 33 on image.

This looks like Charlotte's birth entry. Father should be listed.

Charlotte Parsons
Year of Registration: 1860

**Ann** Report 22 Jan 2011 22:34

The above age for Charlotte is incorrect.....looks like 33 on image....quite hard to read.

I can't find any of them in 1851

GlitterBaby

GlitterBaby Report 22 Jan 2011 21:57

Have you not found Joseph in 1851?

Linda

Linda Report 22 Jan 2011 21:53

I have a Joseph Parsons 1848 Newington, Charles Parsons 1856 Newington & Charlotte Parsons 1860 Newington all born to Charlotte Parsons 1826.

On 1861,1871 & 1881 Charlotte is shown as a widow.

On Charles marriage cert. father is shown as John Parsons Deceased.

I can't find a marriage for Charlotte to John and am beginning to think Charlotte was single and born Parsons but don't know where to go from here.

I need to know was Charlotte born a Parsons or did she marry John to enable me to go forward with this.

I came to a standstill with this a long time ago and decided to give it a break in the hope that fresh eyes might help but I'm still stuck in the same place.

I'd appreciate any help please.

Thank you.
