If this is a second marriage and I would say when there is a huge gap in the age of the children that this is a possibility, what about this marriage of John Smith to Mary Hall September qtr 1847 Stafford Ref 17 147 - as Mary Hall came from Fazeley Staffs. This fits in with the two children aged 3 and I in 1851- jle

Ozibird Report 24 Jan 2011 08:38

I have witnesses on a 1796 and an 1800 Somerset parish record. They are my nxgreat-grandfather's two marriages. The two witnesses are the same men, one being the Parish Clerk as he witnesses practically everyone and is mentioned in notes on the end cover of the book. The other witness is only ever recorded on my nxgreat-grandfathers marriages.

It may depend on the actual church records as I have some that name the witnesses.

One in particular I have just checked is from 1811 in Kirkheaton, Huddersfield and it states "in the presense of" and 2 names given.

Earlier than that don't give witness names though.

I have to say that I have not usually found witness names on early parish records

It's very difficult with such common names to try and find them in 1841 which would help.

Posting this for ref.

1851 England Census

Civil Parish: Birmingham
Ecclesiastical parish: Bishop Ryder
Town: Birmingham
County/Island: Warwickshire

As there's such a big gap in the children's ages it's possible it could be a 2nd marriage.

The actual entry in the parish records should have witness names which may give a clue but will probably just state whether they were from that particular parish.

Jonesey Report 23 Jan 2011 18:17

No easy answer I'm afraid, Particularly with such common names. Even if you got to see the actual entry in the parish record it is unlikely to provide any clues as such records do not normally contain any information about parents, witnesses, occupations or even addresses.

On what are you basing the likely date of their marriage?

Does Aston seem a likely parish for them to get married in? The normal but by no means the absolute, is that unless both lived in the same parish, the wedding would take place in the parish where the bride was living. Does that tie in with whatever you already know about the couple?
