Thanks for the suggestion. It may come to that as I am not near Kew & £50 for someone who knows what they are doing is well worth it.
It has been suggested I try findmypast so I will give that a go (although I think I have previosuly without success).

Julia i have got the army record of my gg grandad he was born Ireland 1835.
i got a researcher who lived near to Kew to look it up for me
he sent me photo copies he made 5 pages
it cost about £50 but i thought was worth every penny
it would have cost me much more in train fares to get to Kew and back.
its his sons i am now trying to find cant afford to pay for each one
if any success will let you know

Hi Keith,
I will be very interested to learn how you get on. I have been trying to get details of my gg grandfather (Michael Kirby) for ages. On 1889 he was a private in the 61st Regiment of Foot stationed in India (born 1847 in Waterford, Ireland). By 1919 he was a pensioner but I cannot find any records of his discharge or death. Other than going to Kew on the off-chanceof getting pensioer info I didn't think I would get further. Good luck & please post with how you got on.

Oh dear - there must be loads of men of that name! I'd suggest looking at all of the Medal cards for men named William Price and trying to pin some down to being an officer in the cavalry. Is the other one named Samuel Price? If so, same problem, with the common name. Might be worth searching the London Gazette site online, to try to find any mention of their commissions as officers.

Hello his name was William Price .he was born in Wrexham .have no idea what his rank was .family member said he was a cavalrey officer his peace time job was a school master....
i think the honourey lieutenant .Samuel was not an officer as he was only in the army for 3 years and his peace time occupation was a school master .two brothers both school masters in peace time
i know the one who was discharged because of ill health got a medal but no idea what for.
i have not long found out i can use the library or i should say i can get ancestery on their computer

Officers files aren't on Ancestry unfortunately, only "other ranks", although their medal records will be there.
"Cavalry Officer" could be lots of ranks! What was his name?

George thank you it is WW1 medals .service and .pensions info i am after
i will print the list of and take it with me
the library said they have full ancestery membership available to look up
i only know one was a cavalry officer can you tell me what his exact title would have been
the other was an honourery lieutenent and quarter master but discharged in 1917 through health issues do not know what they were
now at least i know what records are available

Much depends on the dates you are looking at.If its records after about 1923ish you wont find anything some exceptions though, these records are still held by the authorities, so not online or in the public domain.
In my experience you will struggle to find an individuals records in a local library, unless you are going to use a computer to access records on FMP/ Ancestry or at the National Archives at Kew, who all have records prior to the date i have mentioned.Even some records that are held at Kew you have to visit to access them.
If you don't subscribe to FMP or Ancestry or cant access these records at the library i suggest you ask for a look up I'm sure you can be helped on here.
