Agreed.

Don't export as a gedcom but as a native FTM data file. For FTM 2005 / 2006 I believe this has the extension .FTW. This way as stated, you won't loose any detail.

Once copied across to your new PC simply import the file to FTM 2010. The FTM 2010 file format is completely different and has the extension .FTM but the program will detect this and automatically perform a conversion. This can take several minutes, depending on the size of the file.

First you need to create n up to date copy of your tree file.

Just go File - Export then chose a name and a place on your laptop drive.

I'm not sure what output options FTM 2005 gives put try the default one. I presume that FTM 2010 can read FTM 2005 files. If you export to the gedcom format you will lose some of the information that you have inputted though the most important bits should be saved.

Once you have this file you need to transfer it to your new laptop.

There are several ways to do this.

If you have an external drive of a USB pen drive just copy the file to the drive then plug the drive into your new computer then copy it across.

If the file is not too big you can email it to yourself, then open your email on your new laptop and download it there.

If both lap tops have a DVD drive you could burn the file to a blank CD or DVD then insert the cd into your new laptop.

The easiest method will be via email if its a small file or via/extdrive/USB if you have one.

If you don't have a USB pen drive now may be a good time to buy one. You should be able to get a 2GB/4GB/8GB one for afew quid and a 16/32 GB for not much more if you think a bigger one wil be useful.

Once the file iscopied to your new laptop just open it with Family Tree Maker 2010

Hi Everyone

I have FTM 2005 on my old laptop. I now have FTM 2010 on my new one but, having entered some details I realise it is going to be a long haul.
Can someone please tell me how I can transfer one to the other.
Any help would be appreciated
