Copying Family Trees

Angela

like Jean, I have limited information in my tree on here, and on the one on ancestry .... and the one on ancestry is Private, so it cannot be copied willy nilly.

What I do when someone contacts me is to exchange emails with them asking how and why they think they are conencted with me.

Once I am sure that there really is a connection, then I send ONLY that particular part of my tree that contains their branch.

I have heard too many stories on here, and on other sites, about people accumulating names by copying trees in full, even if only one name or branch is related to them.

Hi Angela

I have had the same problem, so I now just have a "bare bones" tree on Genes & when anyone contacts me I wll allow them to view my tree if they give access to theirs , then if I see a definate relationship I ask if they would like to view my tree on Tribal Pages which has lots of photos & information.
I have found this works well

Hi
Thank you for replying, I have sent two emails but both have just been ignored, she frequently logs into site and have even used other peoples pictures and linked them, I contacted the original lady of the photos and asked her if there was a connection, she replied and said that she has now closed her tree for viewing because of this reason, she kindly let me look at her tree but she had a very large tree and only had direct descendants on it and not other family members.

Hi Angela
Click on the 'Owners' box on the tree page and it will tell you if the owner has used the site recently.
If not and you are absolutley sure you are correct then you could put a comment on the tree. I've done this when I have also traced the other parties tree and found where they made the mistake. Sometimes it is just down to Ancestry 'telling them'.
As with Sylvia - always take it with a pinch of salt and well done for spotting it.

Hi Angela,
I agree with everything Sylvia says. I find that kind of thing on Ancestry from time to time and it's really disappointing to find what I think might be the breakthrough I've been searching for only to realise that it doesn't hang together. I actually found one who'd put as father someone who was only 4 years older than the child.
So certificates, reading parish records, gravestones, any kind of record from the time of the event - then you can put your own jigsaw together.
Good luck
Maureen

Thanks for that Sylvia, I thought that this must have been the case because they did not reply to my email

Thank you

Angela

If you are buying certificates, then you are doing the right thing, and proving your ancestors as you move backwards.

So ........ it is them going wrong, not you.

My advice is always ...... do NOT trust anyone else's work unless they can show you documentation, such as certificates or extracts from parish records as you get back beyond July 1 1837.

Use other peoples' trees (on here, ancestry or any other site) as advisement, but never enter the information onto your tree until you are sure it is correct ...... either because they can show you the documentation OR you yourself have managed to find it.

Don't worry ..... it sounds as though you are doing everything the right way!

Hi

Advice please, I am relatively new at searching for my family tree and I will acklnowledge that whilst some parts of my family research is easy I do use this site a lot for help. On Ancestry as I am slowly moving further back I have noticed that people have some of my direct ancestors in their tree but have different parents listed along with photos. I have contacted people querying their trees asking if they have used certificates just incase it is me that is following the wrong line but even though they are listed as using site regularly they don't reply. I always purchase certificates and ask advice. Is it me going wrong or them.

Thank you in advance for taking the time to reply
Angela
