Where is the Tree?

If you mean your GR tree then simply export a gedcom file (under Family Tree, Gedcoms, above). GR will email the file to you as an attachment and you can save it wherever you prefer.

Hi,yes i did mean my GR tree,do you lose any of the info on GR Tree when you export a gedcom file?

No, your tree on GR remains as it is. Only a copy is taken.

However should you ever decide to upload a tree to GR, from say a tree program on your PC, then your original GR tree will be over-written.

Also bear in mind that photos and other documents / attachments you may have added are not transferred on a gedcom file.

Sandra,

You can only copy your GR as a gedcom file. This means that if you want to open the file on your PC and make proper sense of it you will need a tree program such as FTM or PAF etc It is, however a quick method of taking copies an saving them independently.

Programs such as FTM will allow you to create all sorts of reports, charts - even a fiull copy and save these to disc, or whatever media you choose, so for example you could create customised reports for members of the family and email them.

Well worth the investment if you intend to get serious with the hobby.

Althought I use FTM 2011, I still maintain a duplicate copy of my tree on FTM 2006. FTM 2006 although now dated is easy to use and also allows the visual saving of trees on disk as PDF files. These can be later printed if desired by using a PDF viewer.

When viewing tree charts, FTM 2006 also displays of numerous ancestors/decendents on screen as a PDF which can be moved around by using the slider bars. Why the wonderful facilty was replaced by less or only printable views in subsequent versions I shall never understand.

Yes I keep both 2006 and 2011 too, although 2011 is the one I use the most I do use some of the 2006 options occasionally.

2011 also lets you save charts and reports as PDF or text files within the program confines, which is useful as you can easily access then to make amendments and re-save the updated version.

All the data, information etc you have entered about each of the persons on your tree will be exported. However, as I said earlier, if you have attached any documents, photos etc, these are not exported.
