If it was before 1927, there will probably be no documentation .... legal adoptions did not come in until that year.

Many childnen were taken in by fmaily and friends when their parents died or were unable to look after them ....... or the child could have been an illegitimate child of a daughter of the family or of a relation.

Best thing is to find his birth registration, if you can, then buy it.

or ask your dad, if he is still alive!

Hi Ann,
The Birth was in the 1920'S. I guess you can't hide anything like that. Looking back my original question now seems a little silly. Obviously we all have a birth certificate etc.I think what I really want to ask is if my Grandparents had taken on a child who wasn't theirs, under what circumstances would they? Maybe a young family member who could not take the responsibility of bringing up a child,?But who would the child be registered to? A rhetorical question I guess. I'm sorry..doing my head in.
It's probably all legal and above board..
Just thought I'd try tips first

Andrew,

What documentation do you have that tells you he was "taken in"?

What year are you talking about?

I have found quite a few new members of my family on Genes, the person in question doesn't appear on any tree although I remember him well. It made me wonder if he was adopted. I know I could ask, but it's like I don;t know if I want to know. I just thought of him as dad's brother 'til I started to look deeper.

Who knows? Obvious thing is to look for the registration of his birth. Might have been a result of being orpaned. If it's a while back (that is, he is no longer living) and you are stuck post details and we'll have a look.

In my search to trace my family, I have come across a child who was "taken in" by his relations. Would this child's birth have been documented in the usual manner, or would it have been covered up as a family "secret"?
