If the birth is before 1875, try familysearch site which has lots of births from 1855 to 1875 for Scotland.

Try using the Advanced Search on scotlandspeople and put the MMN in as a keyword. I have just tried that with searching for John McDonald b1855-2009 - 14000+ matches, putting in a MMN from one of the results from familysearch, only two results

Of course you can put in a maiden name, if the mother and father did not marry till after child is born the child is registered with mother's surname. Just don't put in the father's surname and substitute it . My grandmother's sister is registered with her mother's surname.... or else we would never have found her.

Don't know whether that's a help or not?

Thank you for your replies.

I did email Scotland's People, and they have replied stating you can't put in mothers maiden name at all :-(

Hi Angela I have used Scotlands people for years and found it really good but when I started I used to put in info the correct way, sometimes it pays to put in maiden name in surname box of male!. I've found loads that way! Although mine might have been easier as most of them were Italian names!! If you need any help let me know.
