Thanks for that. I think I will have to write. I thought it was too convenient having an email address.

Thanks for your advice

Thanks Madmeg. I hadn't thought of that.

We would have to speak to the vicar and take it from there.

Cheryl, the churchyard might not allow a headstone, maybe something flat in the ground that can be mown over.

Thanks Dame Shelly.

I don't think I used that word when writing the email. I'd better check.

I hope the vicar replies as it would be nice to know a bit more info, and it would be nice to mark the spot.

Cheryl ...my grandad was buried without a headstone (London 1950) ... in with about 4 others -all urelated. One had a headstone.

So .......... I recently re-visited the plot and was allowed to place a 'non-bio-degradable peg with plaque' with his name etc. - supplied free from my local funeral parlour (WAus) ............... I could at least put his name there too!

If it goes to probae there is will. Otherwise it is Letters of Administration

Cheryl, my father who died in 1963 did not have a headstone, partly because my young widowed mother of 3 children could not afford it but also because she did not believe in wasting money on such things.
However, I recently contacted my local councils bereavement services section with a query about the grave and their help was immediate in giving me the exact location of the plot and who also had the right of burial, how to transfer the rights etc. Suggest you contact them as first point of contact.

Thanks,
I have sent the vicar an email (I can't believe I've just said that. lol) and hopefully he will be able to shed some light on it for me.

Thanks
I think he has his own plot. He died in 1916 and his sons were all serving in the forces so probably could not organise anything.

I will try the church records.

I thopught if it goes to probate that there was no will.

It is a small cemetery so shouldn't take long to goe through the records. It's only about 40 miles from here so we may go over one day soon.

Thanks

A lot of people did not have headstones when buried. They were expensive things.

It's odd though that his estate went to his landlady and not to the state - did she pay for the funeral perhaps? Are you looking at the probate records on Ancestry? Although they say the money went to person X or person Y that's usually because they are the testators, they may not necessarily have inherited the money. They are there to distribute the money according to the terms of the will.

Maybe the will itself will make things a bit clearer for you.

Hi,

Does anyone know if I can find out if a burial was paid by the state.
We have a family member with no headstone etc and his estate (£20) went to his landlady.

Thanks
Cheryl
