I did try, Ed, particularly using Ellen as my search tool

but I couldn't find them as Fogg

unfortunately ancestry doesn't allow you to look for *ogg where * is a wild card

I agree that there are some strange transcriptions of the name 'Fogg' out there - because it is such a short name but maybe that is part of the problem.
You also appear to have found the correct 1841 census for James in the name of "Fagg/ Dagg" - i was surprised at the occupation shown of "Tailor" on the one that i had and had overlooked the fact that the image showed that he was not born in the County.
Is it possible to trace him any further or connect him with the person
who was convicted in july 1847?

Thanks for your help
Ed.

First, I think you have to make absolutely sure that James Fogg, the one you are interested in, is NOT on the 1851 or susbequent censuses, under some mis-transcription of his name

as I indicated, I have never seen so many versions of what is actually a pretty simple name.

As for proving that he was the one convicted in 1847

I suspect very difficult.

The UK records usually don't state the parntage etc

Australian records are really based only on what the person himself said, and may or may not be true.

no acknowledgement of what I found?

Lynne

The birth detail seems to be correct for James - his mother was Margaret
{Peggy) Cawthen Can find no details of an 1851 Census record for James who it appears was still single and not married in 1841.
Seems likely that he was the one that was convicted in 1847 and later transported. Is there any way of proving this?

Many Thanks
Ed.

I am surprised at the number of ways in which Fogg has been mis-spelled and / or mis-transcribed

so far I have seen corrections for Fagg, Tagg, Dagg, ........... and I wouldn't be surprised to see Dogg, Togg or many more!

Seriously, I think you need to look again at what you have.

It does seem to me that the James Fogg married to Elizabeth and with child Ellen is NOT the James Fogg with parents James and Margaret

for one thing, he apparently was not born in Nottinghamshire

Secondly, there is another James Fogg with parents James and Margaret also on the 1841

This, I presume is the James Fogg that you refer to in your header message, with wife Elizabeth and child Ellen

1841 Census

Name: James Fogg
Age: 25
Estimated birth year: abt 1816
Gender: Male

Civil Parish: St Mary
Hundred: Nottingham
County/Island: Nottinghamshire
Country: England

Registration district: Nottingham
Sub-registration district: St Mary

James Fogg 25 Tailor <<<<<< NOT born in Nottinghamshire
Elizabeth Fogg 25 b.ca 1816, not born in county
Ellen Fogg 1 MO b.ca 1841, Nottinghamshire

Address:- Lomas's Yd, Bellar Gate

Note that both James and Elizabeth are shown on the image as "not born in county", ie not born in Nottinghamshire

Are you sure you ahve the right James Fogg?

There is also this one on the 1841, with parents James and Margaret

1841 Census

Name: James Fagg
[James Fogg]
Age: 25
Estimated birth year: abt 1816
Gender: Male
Where born: Nottinghamshire, England

Civil Parish: Marnham
Hundred: Thurgarton (North Division)
County/Island: Nottinghamshire
Country: England

Registration district: Southwell
Sub-registration district: Kneesal

James Dagg 55 b.ca 1786, Nottinghamshire, Ag Lab
Margaret Dagg 55 b.ca 1786 , not born in county
James Fagg 25 Ag Lab

Address:- Grassthorpe

Name change made by a Toni Eaton, 01/02/2010, error in transcription

It is FOGG on the image

Remembering that ages on the 1841 for people over 15 are usually rounded down to the enarest 5, this James could also ahve been born in 1815.

Born to James/Margaret Fogg in 1815 at Sutton on Trent Notts. Appears with wife Elizabeth and child Ellen on 1841 census but not 1851-suspect he was convicted in 1847 at Newark and transported to Australia on 'Bangalore' in 1850. Can anyone help?
