can't find a family on the 1901 census

Frances Report 11 Feb 2011 15:06

Hi,

I have a family on the 1891 census.

James Hind 44
Eliza Hind 43
Herbert Hind 16
Ruth Hind 14
Eliza Hind 12
James Hind 9
Arthur Hind 7
Frances L Hind 3
Thomas Hind 5/12

They were in Westleigh, Lancs in 1891.

I know that by 1911 Arthur Hind was living in Mansfield Woodhouse and is on the census and the younger Eliza ended up there as well, I cannot seem to find them inbetween 1891 & 1911 though. Any tips?

Thank you

Jonesey

They may have done what one of my families did...

they emigrated for a few years and then came back. They were out of the country for the 1891 census, unfortunately the 1890 census for the USA where they were has been destroyed so finding them there has been a nightmare.

Thanks for the tips on what info to provide. Hopefully I won't be asking many questions as it's more satisfying to find things out yourself. This one has me stumped though. I hadn't even considered emigration as a possibility.

I am amazed how many people emigrated around this time - including lots of my relatives!
Might be worth amending heading to say "passenger list lookup please" as only certain members can access this info.

I cannot spot the family members returning to the UK 1891~1911 so they may not have emigrated.

I notice that in 1891 the father and eldest son were both coal miners so it is still possible I suppose as a lot of coal miners did indeed emigrate to the USA during that period. I have taken a quick look at the 1901 Wales census but once again I could not spot them.

I note that Frances Louisa married in Mansfield in 1907 so if the family did leave the UK presumably the were back here by 1906/7

Thanks for looking.

I'm pretty sure that Arthur Hind is the same Arthur Hind that I have on the 1911 census, the place of birth definitely matches. He is listed as a coal miner in 1911 as well.

Thank you Maureen, I wouldn't have looked for alternative spellings.

Thank you to Jonesey for finding the wedding in Mansfield and thanks to everyone else.
