Yesterday I went over to my local library & went on Ancestry, I tried to search 1911 census. Even though I know the exact names & where they lived I could not fetch them up. I don't need any look ups as kind people on here have found them for me. Just need to know how to do the search right. I tried every which way on 1 family & could'nt get them up. I must be doing something wrong as you lot find it in seconds.
Thanks Hilary.

Ancestry doesn´t have the full 1911 census on line yet. Just the enumerators books. The full census won´t be available until later in the year.
You can access the 1911 census through Find my Past for which you need to buy credits unless you have a subscription to the site which includes 1911.

Ancestry do not have the 1911 census yet, only the summary books. I think they are going to start adding 1911 htis year. FMP has the 1911 census, I expect thats where your look ups were done.

Also, The Ancestry Enumerator Books I have looked at do not have christian names, so if you put in Fred Smith you get nothing back. I was only able to search using the surname.

Not very clever if you are looking for a common name.....!

Thanks for your replies, I know it is just the summary books, so even if you know all the info to do a search on Ancestry, how do you find them. I know the family I was trying to find lived in Suffolk but it brought up hundreds from everywhere else. Never the right one. I have the info so as you suggest it was most likely found on FMP.

Hilary have you any idea where they lived. You can search the summaries on Ancestry by county.

Look to the rt and choose the county, then the civil parish then click on the parish you think it might be eg Yaxley and click that and you can then go through the images, but as IGP says they only have surnames so are recorded as Mr Smith or Mr Brown etc

Alternatively if you want to give me a name I will have a look for you as I have a sub to the 1911

Hi Jennifer, I will try your advice next time I go to the library. I do try to research myself but ask for help when I get stuck. Many thanks to everyone who helps. Will ask if I get stuck again.
