Hi all,
1881 census for Plymouth, Devon has,
Michell Head (head) aged 38, born Kingsbridge,
Harrett, (wife) aged 46 born Brent.
Sally D, aged 10, born Totnes

I have looked on Free BMD for any Mic* Head married to a forename Har* without finding anything. I know that I could buy a cert - but for a cousin thrice removed, I'm too canny.
Any suggestions?

He was married before 1871 as his is on there as a lodger, married but his wife is not with him.

It is possible that the couple never actually married., as both appear to have been married previously.

Is this one not Michael Head? Thomas and Harriett are a different couple and can be seen separately on the censuses '71 / '81

This might be the Sally D born in Totnes:

The family living next door to Michell (Michael) and Harriet in 1881 are named Drew. It could of course just be a coincidence.

Thomas and Michael Head are brothers - except there are many discrepancies in what people claim.

Firstly glad to hear that your relations only suffered damage to their property and not to themselves.

I am not sure that I would disregard Sally D as she continues to live in the same household with Michael after his wifes death.

Don't know where my earlier reply went.
Sally certainly wasn't registerd in Totnes anywhere around 1871 unless she was a Jeffreys.
I have a possible marriage for him in 1864 but there doesn't seem to be a death for either of them before he went off with Harrett. I note that Sally died as a Head.
I'll put this aside and pester you with another branch of this family later,
