Gedcom files - need help

I've just seen somebody mention Gedcom files.

Could anybody please explain how one downloads of uploads just sections of my tree. I tried it once from GR but all I got was the whole tree which I don't need.

Several people have sent me files but I don't need everything they send and I don't know how to read what they send.

Is there an idiots guide somewhere on the web

Regards

Susanne

Unlike commercial tree programs such as Family Tree Maker, which allows you to export parts of your tree, with GR it is all or nothing.

FTM (and similar PC Tree Programs) will also allow you to import selected parts of a file, so this is something you could look at when people send you a file which has other info you don't need.

There is a thread which describes the use of gedcoms in detail. I'll nudge it up for you to read.

PS If you don't want to fork out for a tree program just yet - they start at around £20 - then try PAF from the Family Search site for free.
