Thanks for the replies but I can't work it out.
I have the marriage cert and she was recorded as Edith Caines, single daughter of William John Rowe.
She was residing 1 Carters Lane, which ties up with the 1911 return.

I can't see a marriage for her Dad as he was William John and there is no match for a William John Rowe and Martha that I can see.

Her birth was recorded as Edith Caines born Mar qtr 1904 Poole, not Rowe.

Apart from the idea that she might have been illegitimate or taken in by the Rowe family, any ideas why she was Edith Caines?

curiously the 1911 census says

6 children born to marriage, 6 still living, 1 has died

Thanks but I had that and that's where I got Edith's Mum as Martha.

As she was in between Walter and Arthur on the 1911, I think it rules out her being illegitimate

Have you got the birth certificates of Walter and Arthur to see what surname they have (and it would give the Mother's maiden name)?

I cannot see them registered as Rowe, these at least were registered as Caines

I think you have cracked it

Martha A Slade Caines died June qtr 1924 Poole aged 51 yrs, a spinster.

She vanishes from the Census after 1891 as Caines and William Rowe stated he had been married 17 yrs on the 1911, which would make it c1894 but there isn't a marriage.

As the children are Caines, she couldn't have married William, so all the children were illegitimate

I'll have a look for the baptisms next

Sorry to PM you but signed up to the wrong subscription and cant post to boards.
im new to this but you helped someone recently with the same family tree and wonder if you can help me with the links.
My grandad's dad was reginald caines born 11.04.1896 in the union workhouse poole. His mother was martha caines of hill alley, poole. There is no record of a father and my tree research goes dead. There was always a rumour through through my grandad that martha was a rowe, as was reginald, but cant find out more. Not sure if there was a divorce, the husband died etc. Why are they in the workhouse? I then found your post. I'd love to know where my caines surname comes from so would be great if you can help.
