Excise Officer Records

I have a relative who was an Excise/Revenue Officer and I have a digital copy of document from National Archives, signed by him, in September 1821, I think I just searched on his name and was lucky enough to find the document, had it some time! He was from Sheffield but in 1841 he was in Scotland, returned to Sheffield by 1851, he worked for the Revenue until at least then.

Thanks Marion. Maybe something will turn up on the National Archives website one day.

One of my ancestors was an excise officer at about the same time & he seems to have moved all round the country. I assume he died before 1841 as have never found any trace of him on the census.
Many years ago I went to Kew & looked at the records there, but it seems that they were kept for each individual station until amalgamated into the Civil Service, so you need to know when & where your ancestor was stationed.
Have never found anything on line, but to be honest, I gave up looking about 5 years ago.

One of my ancestors, Jospeh Todd born c1788, was an Excise Officer from circa 1823-26 in Liverpool, in Sheffield in the 1841 census, and in Manchester in 1851.
Does anyone know if there are any official records of Excise Officers anywhere?
