Hi all,

Does anyone know if you can separate your tree on Ancestry, ie have one tree for each parent, and not as now,all in one.

I don't want to start again doing one side filling in by hand it would take me forever, so just thought I'd ask if there's an easy way of doing it, other wise i won't bother.

Thank's

Sue

As far as I know there is no easy way to split an existing tree.

When I wished to do something similar I first downloaded a copy of my combined tree from Ancestry to Family Tree Maker on my computer. I then deleted those individuals I wished to and uploaded the revised tree to Ancestry as another tree under a new tree name (Most important as if you do not do that it will overwrite your combined tree). I then repeated the deletion process deleting the "Other" side and finally uploaded that as yet another tree with another name.

Result 3 trees, 1 combined and 1 for each parents line.

It is a lot quicker to delete names/records than to start from scratch and have to type in new details. It also has the benefit of retaining any records you may have attached to the individuals.

There is in fact a much easier way of doing this using Family Tree Maker, which does not involve deleting names, which is both tedious and prone to error.

Basically, you create a report containing just the people that you wish to have in tree No 1 then export the result as a gedcom. You then do the same for tree No 2 and export this as your second gedcom.

There are a number of ways of doing this which depend to an extent on where you wish to split your tree. Have a look here for further information.

However, why do you want to do this in the first place?
