Thanks to everyone who helped with this - I have found what I was looking for - turns out the child I was actually looking for is listed in the GRO under his mothers surname (her name at the time of his birth and not her maiden name) and his fathers surname. Just all I have to do now is track him down in person!!!

All sorts of possibilities of names could be recorded.

I know someone, let's call her Miss A.
She met and married Mr. B, ... but later they divorced.

In time she met Mr.C..... and they set up home together and eventually decided to marry. As she was already known by his surname, that is the name she used at marriage, ...ie. C marrying C.
They had a child, baby C.

After some years that marriage failed and a good many years later she met and married Mr. D.......but..... she wanted the same surname as her child, so has never been known as Mrs D.

Good luck with finding the right record.
If there are likely to have been children from the 2nd marriage, you could look for them with her original maiden name, which stays the same, no matter how many marriages occur.

Bren ,if she quoted her fathers name on the cert then this would indicate her maiden name even though she remarried in her current name. Some county records arent online so if in doubt get the cert is my criteria .

My mother in law remarried in 1949 the GRO just has an entry for that marriage
But the Lancashire BMD entry for the marriage shows that she had been married before and gives her maiden name

It has been mentioned previously that sometimes both the previous married name and maiden nave have on occasion been indexed by the GRO. I seem to recall that the examples cited were post WWII. Whether or not this is now standard practice or not I can't be certain.

Might help with your search.

Thank you both for answering so quickly - it will help narrow down my search. Best wishes.

She would normally remarry in her current surname unless she reverted to her maiden name after a divorce or annulment

normally her former husbands name but as father is on marriage certificate her maiden name is on there as well

This may sound a really daft question, but when a woman remarries would she use the name of her former husband or her maiden name? Looking for a second marriage in the late 60's/early 70's and am a bit stuck. Any pointers in the right direction will be appreciated. Thanks.
