Victorian Trials at The Old Bailey

Not only useful for our 'naughty' ancestors.

I do have 'naughty' ones standing trial but I also have quite a few as witnesses in theft and 'coining' cases. In the early cases the person standing trial couldn't speak in their own
defence but where an ancestor was a witness you get a real feeling for the way they spoke as it is reported verbatim.

Courtesy of another GR member who kindly directed me to this site, you might be interested to have a look at www.oldbaileyonline.org

The trial records make for very interesting reading and gives an insight into the social history of the time.

She was directed to the transcripts after googling my ancestor's name which was interesting as I had previously done a surname search when information about victorian prisoners was posted on the National Archives site and nothing came up.

Whatever your reasons, it's worth a look.
