Your local library may have free access to Ancestry, and your local records office certainly will.

The medals will have the name of your grandfather's regiment included in the details on the edge. There should be a regimental museum somewhere - you may need to do some hunting on the internet for the address, especially if the regiment no longer exists (through amalgamation etc). The museum may be able to give you some information.

What country are you looking for as in Australia WW1 records can be accessed for free by going to www.mappingouranzacs.gov.au.

hi does anyone know of a free way of accessing service records as i am skint at the moment and i have just found my grandfathers medals
