In Scotland, the law differs in several respects from the above. Idiots and lunatics are often called fatuous and furious persons respectively; and there is an intermediate state called imbecility or weakness of mind....

If you enter "fatuous" as occupation on the 1851 census you come up with a number of results.

I've forgotten the family, but I once came across a family in some Durham mining village, and their listed disability was they were all born in Lancashire.

call me nosey but I couldn't resist,

just looked at the original, it does actually say Fatuous Person in the occupation, also she is listed as Fatuous in the "whether blind or deaf and dumb" column
