old Portsmouth in 1911

Does anyone have family or even memories of Old Pompey maybe 1911 to the war years?? I am looking for information on 2 Highbury Street that was also a pub maybe called "Angels". Posted this on the general board also. Thanks. Les

Angel and County Court Tavern 2+ 4 Highbury street. It is now demolished.

Item on Google says 1911 Walter Benjamin Knight
Just checked him out he was on 1911 census at
The Stag 89 St thomas St Portsmouth!!!

1921 Walter C G Ring were landlords.

My apologies, Mummo. I did post it on both boards and I did state that at the time. I was not too sure where I would get the best response.

Maryb was it demolished when they revamped the area around the gunwharf or was it earlier?? I guess maybe I will have to try the newspaper archives. I grew up in Portsmouth and I was trying to place exactly where this street would have been...is it close to the Still and West and the National Coal Exchange??

The Newspaper Archives may be at the main library.
Certainly The News don't keep their own family announcements for more than a couple of years, as I asked last week, but they may have general features.
Maybe a letter to them might result in a request for information being printed in the local paper.

There is a website of vanished Portsmouth pubs, but I didn't see the one you needed.

very interesting subject as i live in portsmouth i will ask the two bills when they show there old pictures of portsmouth again to see if they have one of the angels pub have you tried the records office museum rd

Joyce I don't live in England so I have not contacted them. I did use the Portsmouth archive service a couple of years ago looking for pics of Hambrook Street. They were helpful but it was a bit pricey. Who are the two bills??
