I think I read some time ago that you could find the tenants at a particular address using the census but not the actual name. Is this possible?
I'd like to do the search myself, as part of the learning process, and so I could use it on other occasions if necessary.

Findmypast can be searched by address

Ancestry is harder but can be done

BUT first have you researched the property over the last one hundred years to see if street has been renumbered or even renamed

I will try on FindMyPast. I haven't got ancestry or the brains to work out an extra site.

I have only recently become aware of this address and its relevance, so although I know just about where it should be I don't know what it was used for. You never know when you might want to use the information again.
thank you, shiny one.

I woud start with the 1911 census as it's relatively easy.

http://www.1911census.co.uk/search/tnaform.aspx?x=1036080648

select county/registration district if you know it

Put address in residential place box.

put "a" in surname box and specify "names starting with".

Do this for each initial, it only takes a couple of minutes.
