Ann

I have not yet found a service record for someone who died in WW1.

I have been assured by others that they have done that ........... but I never have.

I've suspected that the service records of deceased soldiers might well have been removed from the "active" file.

There are only about 30% of WW1 records for the ordinary serviceman still in existence, and even they are badly damaged.

The records were moved from the Department of Defense to a "safer" building in London at the outbreak of WW2

it was bombed.

The records were then moved to Kew.

There are plenty of surviving records for those who died, amongst the WW1 service records, but of course, even more were destroyed.

SylviaInCanada

SylviaInCanada Report 4 Apr 2011 23:59

ann now annielaurie

That is what several people have told me!

All I can say is that I must have looked for the service records for 40 or 50 dead soldiers since those records became available on ancestry .............. and have not found any of them.

I have found medal cards for most of them, and also often found their names in Soldiers who died in the Great War, but not service records.

so all I can say is that my experience is that service records for dead soldiers either did not survive OR they were moved to another file

.................... and that does make some sense as one would expect to remove "inactive" records of anything from an active file to elsewhere.
