Is there anyone who has the CD Sussex Marriage Index that could do a check for me please. I am trying to establish the status of Grace Richardson when she married a John Coates at Alciston on 21 Aug 1819. I firmly believe that she may have been a widow.

thats her baptism date not her birth date, she could of been much older?

Yes, I thought of that too, safc.
Her age on the 41 census was 50 which means she could have been 50-54, making her born 1787-1791.

According to the 61 census she was born 1788.
And the 51 census says 1787.
Although brother William was christened Oct. 1788. If she was already born you'd think she'd be christened same day?

I must apologise but I have not been online since reading Bob's reply. It looks as though you have come up trumps somehow, thank you so much for all your efforts and the information that you came up with. I don't know where you got it all from. I did manage to find a copy of the Sussex marriage index at my local library and it shows Grace's status as being a widow when she married John Coates, so it would seem that she is the Grace French who was married to Richard Richardson as you pointed out.
