You could always purchase his records for £30.

http://www.mod.uk/DefenceInternet/AboutDefence/WhatWeDo/Personnel/ServiceRecords/MakingARequestForInformationHeldOnThePersonnelRecordsOfDeceasedServicePersonnel.htm

Follow the links on the right of the page.

People who have done this say that it can take a number of months to arrive.

You can see examples of WW2 war returns via link near end of page at:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/Content/Help/index.aspx?r=554&404

Naturally, given the source, this is a Scottish Regt, but the English are essentially the same.

Where have you found the record?

If it is on the Commonwealth War Graves site you might find the next of kin and an address, but if it is in Military Deaths on Findmypast or Ancestry then the death certificate probably won't give the information you are looking for.

Can anyone advise me what is generally listed on these records? Do they show details of where a person enlisted or lived prior to service? I think I've discovered my great granfathers record but not sure if it will provide me with information that I don't already have.

Thanks
