Quite agree Linda,

It's a lovely site with lots of photos of the old parts of Glasgow which are long gone.
Streets, Libraries, Pubs, Schools, they are all there.

The tram picture on the home page street search is where I lived as a boy and that tenement block had eight pubs in it, model lodging for the homeless and was frequented regularly by the ladies of the night so it was an interesting place to grow up.

Happy days ;))

Hi Jean, a small world indeed.

I lived at West Cambell Street on the corner of Argyle Street from the late '50s -1977
Ours was the only block left standing after they built the motorway and destroyed Anderston.
Your block was demolished to make way for the Anderston Bus Station which has in turn been turned into an office block.

Our block wasn't demolished until after 2000 and now houses a Tesco!

Happy days..............

Hi Frank,

You were a bit after me, I was living in Argyle street, late 40's early 50's, left and went to london, but go back as often as possible.
I saw the office block you mentioned and noticed a small green at the back of it and wondered if that was where the backcourt and the middens used to be .
I notice that St.Patricks is still standing though , the motorway seems to have gone round it .

Hopefully I will be there in May so will look out for Tesco !!!

Oh Josie, the middens, the middens !

Brings back memories of Francie & Josie.

I can recall playing amongst the middens when we were kids and it's amazing that we all grew up healthy when you think about it.
I'm afraid the middens are long gone and the green at the back of the old bus station is merely a pleasant area for the office smokers to get their fix.

You can get a good look at it all with Google maps using the wee man in Street view.

St Patricks lost a lot of the frontage of their property to the M8 but did manage to survive. I was on the other side.......... I went to Washington Street primary ;))

For all the "foreigners" wondering what this is all about ........... The middens were the bins which resided in a shelter beside the old wash houses in the tenement back gardens although I use the word garden very loosely indeed and as our shelter did not have a roof, I suppose that word is also very loosely used ;)

PS The Tesco is just a Tesco Express.

I love Glasgow. A coupleof years ago I took my Mum there and was amazed to find that practically every address I have for our Scots ancestors were intact. The only ones that had gone was a butchers shop at Cowcaddens (Now the University campus) and Parliamentary Row (Now under Buchanan Bus station)

We took a trip out to Queens Park and my Mum pointed out where she had pony/donkey rides from her childhood visits to her grandparents. As we came out of the park, she suddenly remembered that her Uncle Tommy had lived just round the corner. 50 years since her last visit she was able to recognise his tenement.

Another good site ... Frank, you might find those eight pubs you remember.

Search by pub name. You can also search by address or location.

www.oldglasgowpubs.co.uk

If anyone lived in a tenement attached to a pub, you might be lucky and find your old home included in the photograph.

Helen,

Thanks for that link and what a lot of drinkers we must have had in those days.
It's even worse than I recall as the area I lived in was then heavily populated with public houses and licensed grocers, within a few hundred yards of our pub there were over twenty pubs, six licensed grocers and a hotel.

Pity I was too young to drink ;)
