How do I record a birth with 2 surnames?

I cant speak for Roots Magic but the way I do it on Family Tree Maker is to enter both of the names, then select the one I wish to mark as 'preferred' (usually the father's surname) as the one that gets reported by default. |

I have come across a relative who was orignally registered at birth with the surname of her widowed mother. A short time later the birth was re-registered with the real fathers name. |
