I cant speak for Roots Magic but the way I do it on Family Tree Maker is to enter both of the names, then select the one I wish to mark as 'preferred' (usually the father's surname) as the one that gets reported by default.

The same goes for situation where someone is known by more than one first name as can happen too. I enter all known variations.

I have come across a relative who was orignally registered at birth with the surname of her widowed mother. A short time later the birth was re-registered with the real fathers name.

How do I record this in RootsMagic? do I use the original birth name or the revised birth surname? - or both!

Regards
