I have found a rellie and his name on census is Hy Silcock, does anyone know what Hy is short for ?

Probably Henry or possibly Harry.

Jno is short for Jonathan. Hy is defo short for Henry as we have lots of henry's in the family

Jno is the normal abbreviation for John and Jon for Jonathan. However there is lots of argument on the web about that.

Read this post yesterday with interest as couldn't find my great grandfather on 1871 census.
Yay, now found him as Jno Dowsett and not John whcih I had trawled for ages.

Its always worth browsing the tips board as you never know when its going to be useful
