Workhouses were also the only hospital in some areas. Perhaps this was the case for them

Thanks for your message 'PigletsPal'

Sarah had quite a number of houses in Woolwich and one in Deptford so that was the reason I asked why the Workhouse came into their lives.
I have had a 'wealth' of information provided that I can now trawl through
thanks to the kind friends on Genes.

regards to all

Well thank you so much for your 'wealth' of information on the above.
My eldest daughter visited the area (Hartshead) a couple of years ago and came across some graves of Wilby and noted them for me.
Genes friends have again come up trumps with information/help.
The Greenwich Society couldn't help me years ago when I lived in the area
Sadly my gt.gt. grandfather died in the Workhouse aged 80 and his daughter gave birth to my grand dad in Princes Road Workhouse in 1865.
She went in for the birth and stayed 10 days so I wondered how they went from 'riches' to rags. I was informed the MOD may have aquiisitioned their properties but it's just hearsay.
You have made my day happier - just heard from my only surviving brother
in Canada that he's recovering from a heart attack/emergency operation.
Sadly he was alone at the time. He is the Rev.Dr.
and is just having his book published.
I cannot thank you enough

My kind regards to all

Grace

the Wilby's all appear to be in the woollen industry

I did find this of her Wilby Ancesters which refers to textile interests

http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/WILBY/2001-08/0997780543

Jonathan Willbe is the primary ancestor of the family at the present writing.
Little is known of him other than that he is supposed to have been christened on
March 13 1660/61 in Hartshead and that he died in Hartshead in 1721. On April 30 1678, he married Ann Hanson, daughter of Henry Hanson and Anna Farrar also of Hartshead. The name is variously spelled WILLBE and WILBY in older documents.

The children of Jonathan and Anne, of Hartshead, were:

1. RICHARD WILLBEBorn in 1680
Mar. MARY ?
He died in 1744 in Robertown,
parish of Birstall, Yorkshire

2. JOHN WILLBEBorn in 1684
He died the same year.

3. JOHN WILLBEBorn in 1685
Mar. RACHEL STEPHENSON
Child: ISAAC WILBY

4. MARGRIT WILLBE Born in 1687

5. HENRY WILBYBorn in 1691
Mar. MARY MITCHELL 25 April 1749
He died 5 Jan 1763

6. AGNES WILLBEBorn in 1698
Mar. THOMAS DYSON 19 Sept 1720
Child: MARY DYSON

At the present, practically nothing is known of other descendants of Jonathan
and Anne, except as regards his son, Henry. Although apparently "seated" in
Hartshead, they appeared to commute to Dewsbury where they had textile
interests, and at least one of these branches moved to Wakefield, another to
Osset
and others as far as Liverpool, Leeds, Bradford, to name but a few places.

HENRY WILBY was born in Hartshead in 1691 and he died there January 5 1763. He married MARY MITCHELL about 1722 in Elland Church, near Halifax, in Yorkshire.
Mary was buried in Hartshead April 25 1749.
Henry and Mary (Mitchell) Wilby had eight children: Henry, Henry, Jonathan,
Richard, Joshua, Joseph, Benjamin and Richard.

On this list of burials in Hartshead most Wilbys seem to be described as clothiers of Dewsbury or Hartshead

The christening of Peter Goldsmith lists his father as a blacksmith but I wonder if his name links to wealthier origins. (Edit - I see his brother died in the workhouse in 1845 so maybe not) Have you found Peter's will or Sarah father's will - Jonathan Wilby?

Name: Peter Goldsmith
Parents: George Goldsmith
Ann Goldsmith
Birth: abt 1778
Baptism: 26 Jul 1778 - St Paul, Deptford, Kent

My female ancestor had a Will proved in 1843 (Woolwich/Greenwich)
which I have a copy. She left a few houses etc. but as she was by then a widow:-
I would like to know how she 'came-by' this 'wealth'. Her husband's occupation ( on the certificates I have) worked at Woolwich Dockyard as a boiler maker etc. so was she wealthy when she married I wonder? If so, how can I verify/research this please?

thanks for reading this
