Thanks Rose for your help. Would you think it was safe to assume that Charlotte Eliza Kernick's three children were the children of John Parsons or that she made him up and that is where the Parsons name first started from?

Charles probably made up a father for his marriage. It's not uncommon.

If no fathers are mentioned on any of the birth certs. it seems unlikely Charlotte was married.

I've also got a birth cert. for Charles, the mother is listed as Charlotte Parsons formerly Kernick but the name and occupation of the father is left blank?

Even more confused now, this is the first I've seen of William and he was born the same year as Joseph therefore they can't both be Charlottes sons.

On previous Census's Charlotte is registered with the children but no mention of a husband!!

I've got the birth cert. of Charlotte and the mother is named as Charlotte Parsons which leaves me to believe that she is unmarried but if that's the case where does John Parsons come into Charles's marriage cert.

Purchase one of her children's birth certs to get her maiden name.

Can anyone suggest what my next move might be in tracing the Parsons family please.

I have Charlotte Parsons 1828 nee ???
She has 3 children Joseph 1848, Charles 1856 and Charlotte 1861 all born in Newington, Southwark.

I can't find a marriage for Charlotte and the only reference relating to the father is John Parsons Deceased on Charles marriage cert. and on 1861 Census Charlotte is listed as a Widow. I have two death certs for John Parsons but can't confirm him as the father/husband as the informant is not a rfelative on either.
