A marriage registration

ProfilePosted byOptionsPost Date

Brian

Brian Report 22 Apr 2011 04:52

In the 1911 census, Thomas Wallace aged 26 was single, living with his father in South Shields.

Thomas' occupation was "Insurance Man"

We believe that within the following 5 years he probably married.

My question is, given this little amount of information, will the GRO search for the marriage cert. for me and how much would that search likely cost ?

There are a few geographical likely regs in Free BMD and ordering each of these certs might cost a total of 55.50 pounds

We are trying to find the most cost effective way of getting to the correct marriage cert.

Thankyou for any advice, Brian

do you have any clues as to wifes name or any children anything that might narrow your search down

Whitenancy Report 22 Apr 2011 05:18

there is a tree on ancestry that has Thomas Wallace son of William and Ruth
with a wife called Mabel

is this a possible match?

Dear Whitenancy,
That looks very promising, how do I find that tree ?
Thankyou, Brian

Dear Whitenancy Robinson,

That looks very promising, how can I find that tree ?...Thankyou, Brian

The tree is on Ancestry and you have to subscribe or take a 14 day free trial to view it. However Mabel Wallace appears to be listed as a child of Thomas with no mother listed. She is listed as dying in 1953 in Prescot Lancs and before that marrying Frederick John Little Barnes as below.

The link to your Thomas on the tree is not very clear and the best way to check would be to contact the tree owner. They may have just put Thomas mistakenly as father of Mabel rather than first husband

As he did not have a second forename, picking out a marriage would be guesswork.......he may not even have married in the area in which he was living in 1911

Thankyou everyone,
For your thoughts and ideas.
I've looked at the trees in Ancestry, and they have the same problem; no marriage reg. for Thomas Wallace and no birth reg, for his daughter Mabel.
That's why I wondered if the GRO would search for his marriage within a 5 year window and knowing his occupation.

Brian, I guess the best thing to do is to contact GRO and ask what service they offer, and how much it will cost.

The Mabel Barnes above (possibly nee Wallace) was born around 1910 according to this death record:

England & Wales, Death Index: 1916-2005

Name: Mabel Barnes
Death Registration Month/Year: 1953
Age at death (estimated): 43
Registration district: Prescot
Inferred County: Lancashire
Volume: 10f
Page: 186

MarieCeleste,
Thankyou, and of course I will try contacting the GRO.
I like to ask the GR tribe first. Answers are often quicker, and advice more detailed than official channels.

Can you say why you think that Thomas fathered a daughter named Mabel?

Have you any evidence which you have found yourself?

I can't help thinking that you'd be better off looking for his death, and finding out who registered the event.........

Brian

Brian Report 23 Apr 2011 16:51

Flick,
I'm trying to help someone and it's this person's belief that her mother's father was Thomas Wallace, "Insurance Man"
I've also explained that Mabel may have been registered before or after marriage with different names,or adopted.
You're right about the death cert. possibilty, I'll suggest that. Thankyou.

In that case Brian, ask the person you are helping for as much info as she can give you about her mother.

Does she have any documents relating to her mother's birth or marriage?

You haven't, as far as I can see, even said whether the death of Mabel Barnes is that of this person's mother.

Brian,
The GRO will do a three year search for you and charge you £9.25 if they don't find it they will refund your money, you will have to say a year eg 1915 and they will search 1914 /15/16 and a county,
Gill
