Where can I look for military records of relatives serving prior to WW1? Unfortunately I don't know what regiment they were in, only that they were serving and died in India in the 1890s.

You could try the National Archives site

www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

It is possible that Findmypast have military records as well. They list these
British Army Service Records 1760-1913
Anglo-Boer War 1899-1902 Records
Other army lists roll calls 1656-1888
Armed forces births 1761-2005
Armed forces marriages & deaths1796-2005

The Army records are held at Kew and some are now online on Ancestry. However when i was at Kew looking for grandads records. he was in the Boar War, I was told only those that came out on a pension had their records kept. I did get his from 1898-1904 & grt x 3 grandfathers too ,he was in from 1825-1849 and came out as a Chelsea Pensioner.
Find MY Past has some records too
