I would have thought that the father would probably gone on ahead to secure employment first before sending for the family once he had enough money for their fare.

Just to confirm about the rail links. Huddersfield in Yorkshire became an industrial town and had rail links by 1847, so by 1864 rail travel would have been the norm. Families would have travelled in the 3rd class on wooden benches-jl

Thank you everybody for taking the trouble to reply to my message. I found the replies very interesting and offered some options I had not considered.
My ancestors mentioned in the original post were coal miners and I believe were in employment in Somerset and probably attracted by higher wages in the Yorkshire coalfields.
It would have taken a lot of courage to relocate a family of 9 young children a few hundred miles away.
I wonder if rail transport would have been the cheapest option.

mine moved from Berkshire to Wales and I've often wondered what mode of transport they used - they were ag labs so very poor and were actually fleeing Berkshire as my G Grandfather had been caught poaching rabbits which was a hanging offence at the tim

They might have travelled by canal boats. It was mentioned on tv that out of work farm workers were forced to go to industrial areas to work in factories.

If they refused they would not get parish relief. They were sent there by barge

By that time there were many thousands of miles of railway track in Great Britain.

If they did travel by train then they would most probably have begun their journey on the Great Western Railway which was founded in 1833

My ancestors travelled from Somerset to Yorkshire around 1864. The family comprised of the father and mother plus 9 children and another adult relative. I would like to know what method of transport they were likely to have used.
My own guess is by Rail, as I can't imagine the entire family being able to walk the distance over a number of days. I do not think they would have access to a horse and cart .
Would there have been a rail network at that time to enable them to make this journey by rail? Any information on the rail system would be appreciated.
