British Subject??

Quick question: A member of the household (the wife) I'm interested in is recorded as "Nationality: British Subject" where none of the other family members have a nationality recorded at all. Does this mean she's from a family in the British Empire as opposed to the UK itself? (She's born in 1872, and the census in question is the 1911 one.)

Thanks!

HI Claire,

I have one like that, it says place of birth Brazil (British subject).
Her father was a commission agent who was travelling alot with the whole family and 3 of his daughters were born in Brazil. I'm guessing its because their home was still England but they were born whilst abroad!

Ahh, thanks Julia! I thought it was a bit funny because her maiden name is Harrison. Makes a bit more sense if there was a similar kind of situation. Cheers!

Possibly; possibly not :-)
Some put it, I think, because they were not sure whether or not to put it. It was a difficult thing to do for the first time.
