A few people have very kindly helped me in finding out some information about my paternal grandmother: Christina Metcalfe (shown on birth certificate as Christiana Metcalfe). My dad always said & my uncle does now that they both believed that their mother was either Irish or Spanish. The details I have for Christina Metcalfe are as follows:-

Born: 23/04/1900
Name: Christiana Metcalfe
Father: Arthur Metcalfe (Railway Clerk)
Mother: Fanny Jane Simpson

I have found a Fanny Jane Simpson (dob c1880) that had married Arthur Metcalfe 13th Feb 1898 in Leeds but then accidentally came across a Fanny Simpson who was born in Spain (c1880) but a British Subject. I can find this Fanny Simpson on the 1911 Cencus as being a servant in County Durham.

Is it at all possible that I have followed the wrong path and been following the wrong Fanny Simpson? I can't find any other information on the latter Fanny Simpson? Has anyone got any advice they could give me please?

Many thanks

When did your grandmother die...was it after 1969 when hopefully her birthdate would be on the death certificate?

Have you got her marriage certificate with all the details of father's name and witnesses?

If you already have a thread about this search, just add a reply onto the bottom of it asking for more help.

Probably another one of these family stories, I dont know what it was with these ancestors my grandmother said she was Irish and I have not found one person born outside of England in the last 200+ years and she was a Simpson too :-)

Thanks everyone but all the details everyone has put down I already have. I don't know when my grandmother died as she had 'disappeared' when my dad, uncle & aunt were very young, but they all seem to have a recollection of her maybe being Irish or Spanish and that's why, when I came across the Fanny Simpson (c1880) that was born in Spain, I wondered if I had started tracing the wrong branch of a tree!

Christina is also shown on her birth certificate as being Christiana which also made me wonder whether that was a Spanish spelling for Christina? So can I safely say do you think that the Fanny Simpson that was born in Spain is/was not her mother?

Hi Jax,

So can I safely rule out the other Fanny Simpson born in Spain?

jax

jax Report 29 May 2011 20:34

I would say so.... the marriage cert will give her fathers name

Simpson Fanny Jane Leeds 9b 583

The one born spain was still unmarried in 1901 so cannot be the right one anyway

This is the other thread -

You really should have added this question to that thread so that there is no duplication of research
