Hi there
I am trying to trace my Flaherty relations from Newcastle upon Tyne back to Ireland. My great great grandmother was Isabella Flaherty born 1885 in Newcastle and I believe her parents were Edward Flaherty 1862 and Isabella Joyce 1862. I have found them on the 1901 census where it states that Edward was born in Alston Northumberland but Isabella is not there. Also when I looked at the 1891 census I found two Edward Flahertys, one in Worswick Street prison and the other living at Centre Street ? How do I know which one is him ? The one in prison matches for the birthplace but the other one seems to have the correct family members !?

Have you got Isabella Flaherty's marriage certificate with her Father's name on it? This will also give addresses and occupations and ages to help you with census information.
Have you got her birth certificate as this will have her Mother's maiden name?
If the censuses do not appear to match what you believe, you need all the certificates to prove (or otherwise) your speculation.

In 1901 Edward and family (minus mother Isabella) are living at 5 Centre Street, still at 7 Centre Street is the Joyce family (spelt JOICE)........ so I would hazard a guess that the 1881 census is correct for Edward??

Just wonder where mother Isabella is in 1901??? Is she back with the family by 1911??

I can only see one Edward Flaherty in 1911 with the same occupation as 1901 - bricklayer's labourer - but he is living in London, married 12 years and says London is his birthplace! Though with this Edward, who knows!

Strange that Isabella was missing on the 1901 and now Edward on the 1911........ I wonder, could they have separated???

Thinking the same Dee. Unlikely as it seems I am putting the 1911, though as there is no way to prove if him probably a bit redundant! I suppose we could look for them 1901, have had no joy there myself.

EDIT this Eward is 43 making birth year 1868 so even more unlikely.

wow thankyou both for all that, that is wonderful ! This side of my family are certainly hardwork ! Although I have just found out from a friend on this site who is distantly related to me through the flahertys, that edwards address in 1912 was Walker road Newcastle whilst his wifes address was 5 Centre street according to their sons army records so marriage breakup is looking very likely. What happened to my Edward after, who knows !?
