remarrying in mid 19th cntury uk

Hi David
It happened to one of my sets of GGrandparents they both remarried but put themselves down as being widowed.
One remarried in Suffolk and the other one moved up to Liverpool and remarried there and also changed her name!!!

Quite often they would not remarry, but any children that a woman had before would be given the new man's surname.

No they didnt,This is why some got away with remarrying bigmously when the marriage failed. This applied to both male & female

did women have to show proof of their husbands death before marrying again in the mid 19th century.
