What dose this word mean on a census

Hi i would like to know what the word__ INMATE__ means when it is writen after a persons name.?
eg. in 1851 census.
Thos Cave age 74 birth about 1777 Gilsborough Northamptonshire.
Thos is living with these people
William Page
Jane Page
Charles Page
These people could be his dead wifes family as he was married to a Martha Page

Inmate usually refers to people in prison or workhouse or simalar institution.

I can't see why the example you quote says inmate as he appears to be related to the head of tne household - maybe father or father in law?

The possiblity is he may have bneen receiving parish relief and was an out boarder to the local workhouse

It normally means they are in an institution of some kind I shall go and have a look

Looking at other images of pages in that district it seems that that enumerator has used Inmate several times. I suspect he should have put Lodger or Visitor.

Just in case you dont know, ( and it might help) his birthplace is correctly spelled Guilsborough and pronounced Gills- Burra, ( different to the place up north pronounced GEEZE-BORRO)
