Hello again,

I'm thinking of taking the Premium Membership on Ancestry . com

It's a bit more expensive than the 'Essentials' membership so could you please tell me -

1) Do you think it's worth the extra cost?

2) When it says "Parish Records from 1500 to 1980, does this mean it is a comprehensive record and I will be able to find ancestors who were born before the records in this site were started?

Thank you!

Any transcribed records are only as complete as the originals............

Many counties/areas have online Parish Clerks........free. So check first whether the areas in which you are interested have these.

To find out, go to.............

http://www.ukbmd.org.uk/

......and click on OPC in the menu to the left

Also, don't forget the LDS sites...................also free

What do you mean by 'this site'?

I had Ancestry premium till recently, and will again when I can.

I found it especially valuable because I have London ancestors and the parish records are very good, being able to look at marriage certs and baptisms saved me a fortune!

Thank you!

I meant here, at Genes Reunited, where my ancestor's births disappear before the 1820's.

I think I will subscribe to Ancestry, thank you for the tips and links.

Always take the 14-day free trial subscription first, so you can see exactly what's there.

The free trial will get you access to everything. Then you can check what narrower subscriptions will get you, and whether that looks like enough. If you're not searching outside the UK, I don't think there would be much point in paying for worldwide; the UK deluxe should cover it.

Be sure to cancel or subscribe for exactly what you want by a few days before the 14 days expire.

Even if the parish records you want aren't there, I absolutely agree that the site is more user-friendly -- searches are more effective and productive, for instance -- than at this site.

I would also take a 14 day trial at findmypast again remember to cancel after 10 days if you don't wish to continue. I have both and have to say they both have good points and bad points

I would buy the 2011 version of family tree maker platinum, as this contains a 6 month free subscription to ancestry. My copy cost just under £30, a much cheaper way to use ancestry, and you get the family tree maker programme for the price.

I think that, at present, the main collections of parish records are for London and environs, Liverpool and Dorset.

For me, no.

Ancestry Premium was a waste of money (that is, as far as my research areas were concerned) and I reverted to Essentials the following year. If you have London Ancestors then it might be worthwhile.

But as suggested try it first before committing to a full subscription.

Hi Joe, I 'done' the 14 day trial. I liked the style of their trees, found it easier to navigate than Genes, also I found a brand new Canadian relative I never new existed who is a Premium member and we 'shared' our two trees, mine here on Genes, I then 'stopped' my trial, got her to invite me as a guest and as such have access to view 'our' tree re updates etc and whenever we require some research we do both trees on both our sites and share the information.
