In the near future I am going to Cork on holiday. Both my great grandparents came to England from Ireland and married here. On the marriage certificate and consequent census records it states Cork as their places of birth. Most Irish counties have a central place you can contact to research family born there, but this doesn't seem to apply to Cork.
I don't know if the great-grandparents were from Cork City or Cork County (also problems because of alternative variations of their married surname), so has anyone out there any information about a central place in the Cork area where one can start initial searches.
Any help gratefully received.

First, you could subscribe (free) to the rootsweb mailing list for Cork -

You can browse, too, previous posts.

And have a look here

Betty, wherever you go in Cork, if you can and have time, please do visit the Michael Collins Heritage Centre, the heritage centre in Cobh, and ring the bells in the Church of St. Anne Shandon :)

Thanks for the extra message Joy. Have Michael Collins Heritage Centre on my list already, and visited Cobh some years back - although none of my relatives left for America (as far as I know), it was still very moving to visit the heritage centre.
Now just hoping for a good sailing - it's very windy here on the west coast today. Fingers crossed it will have died down before next week, but will take seasickness tablets just in case!
Will let you know if I find out anything.
