X sometimes with "her mark" was generally for someone who couldnt read and write.

I have one for the year 1918 with X which is quite late for illiteracy.

It means that they couldn't sign their own name and put the cross which was witnessed.

Usually, yes. But occasionally it could be the case that the registrar just assumed they couldn't and just asked them to make a mark.

I have just received a Marriage cert that i sent off for and i noticed that where the bride and groom had to sign their names it said. ..
the mark X of Sarah Tyler, does this mean that the person couldn't read or write
