Often do I have senior moments ;-)

"is there anywere cheaper than £9 to buy it " - not unless you can get to the records office to view the parish register, or it is on the IGI, or maybe the OPC (online parish clerk) has it in his records.

Is he in 1841 in Stoke Damerel? and in 1851 with wife Ann in Devonport?

You might find a possible baptism on IGI

Do you know if he married as the cert would give the name of father if he knew it

Have you found him in a census? Does it give a more specific place of birth?

Do you have his marriage certificate? from that you can see his father's name and occupation.

REgistration only began in 1837 so you will not be able to purchase a birth cert for 1815
