I think it was possible but pretty unusual. What makes you ask?

Did a google search, this might be of interest

There were a lot of bigamous marriages - sometimes people in the know turned a blind eye, or the person re-marrying could have 'assumed' that spouse no 1 had died.

Probably, as long as the witnesses to marriage no 2 didn't say anything, there was no way a Registrar or Clergyman would know that they weren't single or widowed; they'd have to accept the couple's declaration. Big brother wasn't watching so closely ;-)

so that means my grandfather was the son of her first marriage ( Glynn),but used the surname of her second marriag(Todd).I have been unable to find the baptism Of my grandfather under the name of Todd
Thanks Alan

Look for a birth registration (try freebmd) under

Mothers maiden surname
1st husband's surname
2nd husbands surname

Technically, the birth could be registered by a mother in the assumed father's surname. ie if Joan Smith was living with Adam Brown as his wife (without a legal piece of paper) she could register their child as Charles Brown, registered by Joan Brown previously Joan Smith!

If they weren't known as man and wife, the father would have to be at the registration and acknowledge paternity for the child to be registered in his surname (as well in more recent years, hers)

If the blood father wasn't present, then the child would take the name which the mother was using at the time.

And yes, it was quite common for a step-child to assume the step-father's surname. As long as it isn't/wasn't used fraudulently, you can use what ever name you choose.

my grt grandmother Charlotte Bygrave M Nathaniel Glynn 1853
Children John b 1854 Bethernal Green
henry b 1859 beyhernal Green
Charlotte m Robert Henry Todd 1868 engineer
My grandfather was henry Todd b1859-1860 hackney
so i asumme Henry was realy Glynn not Todd.
In both marriages Charlotte named Her father Daniel occ shop keeper.
If this is correct all our family have used our Surname as Todd not Glynn

Here is Nathaniel in 1861 , he says he is married

Name: Nathaniel Glynn
Age: 30
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1831
Relation: Son
Father's name: William Glynn
Mother's name: Mary Glynn
Gender: Male
Where born: Hackney, Middlesex, England

Civil parish: Bethnal Green

William Glynn 70
Mary Glynn 70
Nathaniel Glynn 30
Charles Cook 36

this is the John Glynn in the 1871 census I think

Births Mar 1857
Glynn John Hackney 1b 343

it could be interesting to see who his mother was, Nathaniel could have been 'widowed' from his 'marriage' with someone else
