Just a note, If a child is born to an unmarried mother (that is unmarried to the baby's father) and the father of the child goes to the register office with the mother to register the child in his name, then the GRO register will have two entry's with the same vol and page numbers, one with the fathers surname and the other in the mothers surname, but the child's surname on the actual cert will be the fathers.

IF SO AS SHE WASNT MAARRIED TO FATHER MAAYBE WHY SHE HAS TWO SURNAMES

Barbara - she was only registered once - the registration has both surnames on it, so there's 2 entries in the index, but both point to the same registration.

Hello Barbara, the rule was that if a child was born to a married woman the birth had to be registered in the family name of her husband, this was so the child could not be called illegitimate , but the birth could also be registered in a different surname, the mother' s or if the father agreed the father' s. So what Contrary Mary said makes sense since you know your mother got married again. :-)

Born before the 2nd marriage took place is the most usual reason.

just look up my sisters birth record,and she is registerd twice,with different surnames,one is in my mothers first marriage surname,the second is in her
second marriage.how come
