Did they list only persons physically present in the house at the moment of the census taker's visit, or could they say " Thomas Royle, 14" amongst their sons and habitants, even though Thomas was at that time actually over having dinner at his cousins house on the other side of Manchester?

All persons who had spent the night at the address on the 7 April 1861 were to be included in the household schedule that was completed by the head of the house.

People who were spending the night away from heir usual place of abode were to be enumerated at the location where they actually spent the night.

But as Cookie said, it didn't stop people being enumerated twice!

People made mistakes. On the 1871 my grtx4 gran is listed twice. She was a monthly nurse and is listed at the home of the new mother she was taking care of as well as the home she shared with her daughter. Would guess her daughter made the mistake but goodnes knows which house she was actually at !!
