If a family was living in a caravan ie travellers or gypsies ect, would it be written on the census that they were?

No straight forward answer I'm afraid. Sometimes itinerant families were recorded and other times apparently not.

I think that a lot depended upon the enumerator and exactly how thorough they were. I have seen census entries where people were recorded as living in caravans, in barns and even one under a hedge.

Thanks to all your answers. I have relations whom i am pretty sure they were living in caravans but it only says the area & where they were living. Occasionaly i have seen cottage or house written so how can i be sure they were in caravans?

Maybe an earlier or later census will give clues.
If you note neighbours names and look them up in other census, it may be possible to guess whether or not a caravan has moved in between the 'dwellings'.
Not often easy to prove type of dwelling until later census gave more details.
