Nov 1915 is a bit early to be conscripted under the Military Service Act of 1916.

Hi, Well it looks like Thomas came to Whitehaven in 1901 to live with his Aunt and Uncle. I have yet to receive his Birth Cert of confirm his parents identity. However, in his Aunt and Uncles house they have a daughter and a son, Harold - Harold is the same age as Thomas, not sure if any of this is relevant, but Harold may have gone and Thomas stayed? Unsure!!

My grandfather wasn't in the Services - my father said it was because he was the eldest son of a widowed mother, and ran the family milk/dairy delivery business.

I don't know if this reason for exemption is a myth or not, but I never heard mention of any disabilities etc relating to him. Could it be that he was the sole bread winner?

Is it possible that certain individuals were NOT called up for Service during the First World War? I have a relative Thomas B Lynch, married in Whitehaven Cumbria - Nov 1915, i cannot tell if he was called up or not. How would I find out? He is listed as working as a "Cellar Man" at the time of his marriage. Could be be an Objector??
